Meet the team! Ch.1 Making Molds Together ─ Father and Son in Hao Ying’s Mold Processing Department

2022.08.08

Hao Ying Machine Enterprise moved to Tainan Technology Industrial Park in 2018, only the processing department remained in the Xigang site, where the team handled all kinds of molds that go with the company's main product, production equipment for cosmetic products. Among the types of molds, lipstick molds are the majority.

Walking into the factory area on the first floor in the Xigang site, the processing department manager, known as "Brother Tang", was polishing the mold in front of a large table. Beside him, a young man who was operating the processing machine turned around, his eyebrows and eyes were somewhat similar to Brother Tang’s. This was Han-Jie, Brother Tang’s son, who officially joined the team two years ago.

"He was still in high school at that time, but had no interest in studying, so I said to him, if that's the case, why not join me at Hao Ying? You could gain some practical working experience earlier." Although Brother Tang scolded his son for not take the future serious enough, he still confessed with pride, "But I didn’t expect him to learn so well and so fast! I asked him to take over the CNC machining affairs, he finished eight sessions of trainings and was able to work independently after that. I was quite surprised and very proud.”

Unlike Brother Tang’s delighted tone, Han-Jie sounded more conservative when talking about his decision, "I knew that my father would teach me as much as he could. I would rather work hard and understand the reason behind each step of the processing procedures than to only perform them repetitively day after day, which might happen if I work somewhere else.”

When asked if working with his father is stressful because of the expectations, Han-Jie thought for a while, "As I am also very cautious about carrying out my duties, it's hard to say if the stress comes from working with my father, but I think I am quite nervous around him, there are times I feel uncertain about my decisions, because he is such an expertise already."

"If rating from one to ten, I would say the pressure of working with my father is an eight!” Han-Jie finally admitted with a small laugh.

Working chemistry between a father and son

Han-Jie was often worried of making mistakes, he didn't want to cause trouble for the others. When Han-Jie made a mistake, how would Brother Tang deal with the situation? Brother Tang replied without hesitation: "Of course I would let him know that this is a serious matter. I would not be soft about it, even if he is my son."

"I am quite straightforward when it comes to reviewing mistakes, however, I will never put on a public show and embarrass Han-Jie deliberately. After a very harsh discussion he will walk out the building to get some fresh air, when he comes back, I will share with him how I will handle the task, and that’s when he really reflects and learns.”

"He takes my instructions most of the time, after all I am the department manager, but within a safe scope I will let him make his own decisions based on his judgement.” Brother Tang’s tone turned gravely, “I always tell him if you want to make progress, take the initiative to learn, ask whenever you have a question. This is the way I mentor my own kid, as well as any new member who join the processing department."

It could be stressful being the manager of a heavy loading department, especially that Brother Tang was very responsible and held a high-standard on his team’s working performance. When noticing his father was irritable during work, Han-Jie would not recklessly offer to assist, instead focused on his allocated duties and worked to finish them even faster. He knew that the only way he could be helpful to his father at such times was to clear as much work off the table as possible.

What Han-Jie admired most about his father is that Brother Tang could be very demanding when it came to keeping the production status on schedule. Even when Brother Tang had his days off, he would still call Han-Jie to make sure everything is on track. When there was a production issue that had to be dealt with immediately, Brother Tang would take the matter into his own hands. On some weekends he even wanted to come to the office and get ahead of schedule.

"I am quite dedicated to what I do! I can’t sleep well knowing there is something that can be done but remains undone, I will toss and turn in bed thinking about it, so why should I torture myself this way?” Brother Tang laughed, “I rather spend some more time completing the task then return home, this would guarantee me a good night rest."

"I always remind Han-Jie," he emphasized, "the right mindset is everything. Do you ask yourself to get things done or get things right? The two are completely different. I hope he focuses on what he set his heart on doing and determines to become the champion. Since he had decided to embark on the road of designing molds, then do it well.”

Ways to relieve stress after work

Brother Tang liked to climb mountains or ride the scooter to explore an area. Han-Jie's first scooter round Taiwan trip was accompanied by his father. The duo still ride home together after getting off work every day. If Han-Jie got off work first, Brother Tang would jog home. He was well-known in the company for his enthusiasm for outdoor activities. Before the outbreak of the epidemic, some colleagues were interested in mountain climbing and camping, he was very willing to plan and take everyone on trips.

Brother Tang teased his son for being an ‘otaku’, the Japanese term for guys who like to stay at home, and took the opportunity to ask Han-Jie when he would go hiking together again? Han-Jie immediately waved his hand and refused. He had been climbing mountains with his father since kindergarten and had climbed to the point where he already lost interest. For him, staying at home and playing online games was the way to relax. Brother Tang only smiled, his kid had grown up and had his own ideas and interests, he respected that and was able to adjust very well.

Inheriting mold designing and making

Molds were an integral part of the cosmetic products production. At Hao Ying, the designing and processing of each mold was directed by Brother Tang, who had more than 16 years of experience. A good mold needed to be lightweight, easy to use, and easy to clean. There were many ways to achieve these goals, CNC was just one of them, the key was whether the designer could think from the end-user’s point of view, relate to the customer's requirements for quality of the final products, and fine-tune the mold to improve the end-user's mass production experience. This could not be accomplished solely by taking trainings of operating the processing equipment or tools, such flexibility of application would have to be based on the accumulation of field experience.

As a supervisor and a father, Brother Tang was starting to pass on his skills of making a mold from scratch to Han-Jie. He was happy that his son valued the legacy and made up his mind to inherit the specialized craftsmanship. Moreover, he encouraged Han-Jie to explore the industry, and integrate the skills with his own discovery.
